The Development of the Skateboarding Subculture’s Fashion in the 90s’: How Skate Shoes Influenced Current Footwear Designs

photo 19.jpg

Abstract

Skating subculture has influenced fashion and shoe designers in the last two decades. Skating encapsulated fashion, music, and a way of life. People who partook in the subculture found a new free-spirited way to live, while enjoying a sport for fun. With vert styled tricks and new methods of skating, skaters changed in the ‘90s emerging as a recognized sport though not everyone could accomplish the magnitude of athleticism. Famous brands started changing their business practices and created collections that fashion continues to use. The ‘90s transformed this small subculture into a mainstream icon that everyone wants incorporate into their daily lives

Creating memorable moments from friends and family and creating collages from the photos they send. From the likes of Hannah Höch, Cococapitan, Raoul Hausmann, John Stezaker, and Charlotte Penabel were the main inspiration of the project.

Perception.

Perception is about a woman who, on the outside, looks fine, but on the inside, she fights against herself. She puts on a strong front, then her inside voice comes out, creating a fight inside her own mind.

Collaboration with Preen by Thornton Bregazzi

A project to find a brand to collaborate with and create a brandzine based on the brand's aesthetics and use their clothes for the shoot. Encapsulating an iconic brand is difficult, but the outcome was Vivienne Westwood chic, a bit of punk aspect with the feminine clothes.

Fashion Film

The inspiration was to showcase the clothes as well as a victorian grunge tea party theme. Videoed on a camcorder to give the raw, vintage feel that the clothes paired nicely with. Overall the theme was accomplished and shot in the way it was set out to do.

Personal Research Project

Androgyny in fashion is when you are ‘genderless,’ meaning that the style is neither feminine nor masculine. This personal research project is about finding your style without dealing with gender or sexuality. All my life, I have been scolded for not dressing feminine enough, so I wanted to show that regardless of what you wear, as long as you love it, that is all that matters. Come along on the journey with my findings into the world of androgyny.
